6y5m here - The game does a good job of explaining how much of the timeline is up to random chance.
I also think it'd be realistic (but not "fun") if each playthrough, you had a chance of being assigned nice or mean advisor who would increase or decrease your hope by 1 every turn for the duration of the game.
Where I did it it’s basically impossible to do it that long because you are part of 4 years project and anything after that is on your dime ;). So everyone wants you to graduate

Thank you for reminding me why I stopped at masters, haha...
I once saw someone describe graduate school as a "youth amputation", and I think about that a lot.
