Using Lemmy - what I've learned so far

So I don't know everything yet, and I know we're setup on a pretty busy instance so hopefully over time it'll spread out more or if this becomes a thing we can self host or whatever, but for now here's what I know:

There's two kinds of spaces where you can pull content from, local and all. Local as I understand it is every community connected to the instance you signed up on so every community that was started under the lemmy.world instance is considered local to lemmy.world.

All I believe is all communities connected via the fediverse, which is basically all instances of lemmy.

If you go to another instance of lemmy (like lemmynsfw), you might notice that no content shows up - that's because you're not signed in on that instance. To see content from it, you need to log in to your instance where you created your account (so for me it would be lemmy.world) and then go to "communities". Then search for lemmynsfw. It will return your search with all related communities that use that keyword. Click on it to view it and if you want to add it to your subscriptions, click on subscribe. Some communities you can just join, others you have to be approved for.

Once you fill your subscriptions up with you communities you want to see content for, you can then change you main page to show just your followed communities and not the default "local" community posts.

For apps, I use Jerboa, which is pretty slick, has an option for an old school kind of reddit look.

It's a little wonky but overall you can get it setup to look/feel like reddit did and over time it'll fill with more content.
