Why do some TV broadcasts show a person translating it to sign language instead of using subtitles?

I assume there must be a reason why sign language is superior but I genuinely don't know why.

It removes the barrier of having to read in a language you may not be proficient in when sign language is your native language.

Sign language is not international, every spoken language has its own, sometimes more than one, American and British sign languages have differences.

And English is not the same as either ASL or BSL which was my point.
