Dammit. I've been hailing Cabs with too obtuse an angle. Explains why I rarely get one and when I do it's usually some skinny guy with no hair.

Don't pet people. People are easily angered and can charge when startled. Pet dogs, cats and goats.

The red zone is also useful for checking if it's raining, and there's a simple mnemonic to remember how to do it:

"palm to the sky, everything's fly. Palm to the ground, you're in danger town"

I don't know, a really rigid 45-degree palm-up could look pretty sketchy, too.

Who's put there calling a taxi by just sticking their arm out perpendicular to their body? Have I been doing it wrong the whole time?

Slap a thumbs-up on the end and it still mostly works in all situations, while avoiding accidental hate crimes.
