I know its not exactly the same, but Gas Masks used to use Asbestos filters as well.

They were of course a lot safer as long as they were fresh and part of the sammich that made the filter was still in good shape.

Yeah don't try to put on a soviet gp5 without replacing the filter with a modern nato cartridge first
