Seems like a lot of effort to only fly him twice. Any idea on why they didn't use the balloon more often?

Wow, you're right! I guess it made one more appearance in the Macy's Egleston-Christmas Parade 1987 and then it was retired. I wonder if it got damaged during that parade.
