Two of them died*. The second one happened to have some good connections with the higher ups.

The other group did everything they could to keep the enemy occupied and risked their personal destruction on the success of the other group.

I doubt many office workers will be so committed to a plan.

I could've sworn the Council of Elrond took months, I just looked it up and it was only a day. Maybe I got it confused because it took me months to read the chapter.

From memory it was several months between Frodo arriving in Rivendell and the actual Council of Elrond. Maybe that's what you're remembering.
