'Where do I begin?': US Sen. Todd Young rejects Trump for 2024 presidential bid

I know this is old and hinges on your favor of trump, but I have more respect for Sen. Young after this and his breaking away from Republican shenanigans regarding this border security.

Holy fuck, one of my state's politicians is doing the bare minimum!

I'm trying to compare Young and Braun on some of the current topics

Braun's account made a stupid social media post regarding border security/immigration recently.

I'm trying to figure out why he and party liners reject it so hard.

I appreciate that young broke away from herd on something.

I don't know how those two both got elected in Indiana when they're so different despite both being Republicans. I guess Hoosiers will vote for anyone with an R next to their name. But I'm betting Braun will be our next governor, sadly. On the other hand, Trump endorsed him and we know his track record. Still...

Plus, we had one D prior.

MSgtRedFox@infosec.pub · 3 pts · 2y

Well, they only got elected by 50.7 and 52.x percent.

I guess in lieu of multiple parties, or no parties, I'll take ones that differ from at least all extremes.

This is who I was previously talking about. I didn't realize you were local.

FlyingSquid@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 2y (14 replies)

Terre Haute, sadly.

👋🏼 Previously (1991-2002) West Lafayette here.

Moved back to my prior, more lefty Minnesota where family is, but miss some aspects of Indiana.

I've only been in that area a handful of times. I went to Wolf Park and we've been to Feast of the Hunter's Moon a couple of times. That was great.

dream_weasel@sh.itjust.works · 3 pts · 2y (4 replies)

There's better stuff around here, but those are kinda iconic.

FlyingSquid@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 2y (3 replies)

Feast was a great time. Both times. And I can't think of how else I'd get a good rabbit stew in Indiana.

Wiz@midwest.social · 3 pts · 2y

Hey, I'm one of the Freemasons that works the rabbit stew booth at the Feast every year!

Could be worse, you could be from Ohio like me.

FlyingSquid@lemmy.world · 5 pts · 2y (4 replies)

It really couldn't be. Have you been to Terre Haute? It makes Youngstown look nice.

dream_weasel@sh.itjust.works · 4 pts · 2y

How bad can it be? You have... um... the ghosts of all those death row guys and stuff.

Yeah I see.

0110010001100010@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 2y (2 replies)

I've passed by on I-70 during various road-trips but never stopped. If it makes Youngstown look nice though must be one hell of a shithole.

There is a reason to stop if you are of a certain political persuasion- Eugene V. Debs, who ran on the Socialist ticket in 1920 from prison and got a significant percentage of the vote (only 3%, but for a socialist in the U.S., in prison no less, that's amazing), was from Terre Haute and there is a museum there in his former house. Bernie Sanders took a sideline from his campaign in 2016 to make a private stop to see the museum.

Huh, I'm going to make a point to stop next time if I can and check it out. Cheers!

MSgtRedFox@infosec.pub · 3 pts · 2y

Ah, I'm sorry. 😉

And yet he bent the knee and voted against the border deal that was going to keep Trump from campaigning on a border crisis.

MSgtRedFox@infosec.pub · 1 pts · 2y (2 replies)

Where did you see that? I thought he was standing out as few republicans who were supporting a compromised border / immigration bill?

themeatbridge@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 2y (1 reply)

Check the voting record. He voted against it.

MSgtRedFox@infosec.pub · 1 pts · 2y

Which one? Border Act of 24 was shutdown due to republican shenanigans.

ilinamorato@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 2y (1 reply)

I have very little respect for Young, but his turning on Trump very slightly improves it.

MSgtRedFox@infosec.pub · 1 pts · 2y

Yeah, I did one of those congressmen contact emails and conveyed support for diverging from the party.
