We had a post recently about posting your own original music, maybe we can also have some discussions aimed at music-makers.
I write music, and I aim to write just a little bit every day, and finish every composition that I start, without too much pressure for everything to be "good." Every six months or so I listen to everything I wrote recently and pick out the good stuff to put online, and everything else gets stored away in a sort of personal archive that isn't public. Maybe it's a "quantity over quality" approach but for me it feels like it helps to always be working on something

I start with an idea, progression or melody and go from there. Usually I'll take the bones, and then figure out a loose arrangement using a looper pedal and guitar, and hop on drums and play along to get the rhythm. I usually spend a decent amount of time at this stage, working on a handful of songs at a time. I usually start with a jam and let it organically grow and evolve over time and as I become a better player.
Ill run through to where i have it down, performance wise. Maybe work on some lyrics and harmony here too.
Then I'll start recording. This is where I really get into the weeds as far as bassline, more finalized arrangement, melody, lyrics, consistent drum fills and ambience.
I used to be way more prolific, but life happens, and I guess it definitely is more of a quality over quantity thing for me now.
I'm just getting back into writing after a long run with substance abuse. I do it cause I love it and it's therapeutic. I don't care if anyone hears it or not. I love listening to my catalog, it's like messages left in time for my self to relearn things and experiences I may have forgotten. To say music is my life is an understatement. I do have lots of stuff I don't post though, most of it from when I was much younger.
Now that I'm older, and hopefully wiser, producing songs is not too important to me. I still love to do it, but it's more of a spiritual practice.
