Part of me likes being recognized for something I did, but just don’t do it in person or I won’t know how to respond.
I once read that the best way to reply is by simply saying thank you.
It really is. Something like:
"Thank you! I've been working on [thing] for a long time."
Or
"Thank you! I read about this make up style on [site]."
Thank them, maybe add some background info, be jovial and appreciative, then you can just move on.
