I’ve set everything to lowest or off, 720p and scaling at balanced I think and it is not only blurry but barely hits 30 and also dips below. So far from a „good“ experience in my book but I must admit I’ve put in a couple of hours into the game like that because I was waiting for pc parts to arrive (now I’m back to 4k 120fps my god I’ve missed it so much xD)

That's playable for me, but most of the time I'm using Moonlight to stream it from my PC. By doing that, it's buttery smooth. Very easy to setup, and sounds like you've got a decent gaming PC too. Stream it :)

I don't know about being a beta tester, and I typically stick with one game for a while, usually until completion. I do know a lot of players who spend one day with a game and that's it, however. I'm not sure gameplay on the deck changes that at all.

Professional-News362: Nah. Steam deck oled is now my main console. Seriously I've got a 4090 rig collecting dust. I'm even gaming with the dock before even sitting at my pc it's just the best.
For me, I get annoyed when I have to mess with settings too much. I will if I have to, but for the most part I play games on default settings. I also don't test games after installing them unless I'm about to play them. Helldivers 2 I played with default settings, looks like shit but plays all right out of the box. I understand wanting to get best performance But I also tend to play more indie, older AAA games, and emulation the deck. I see my deck as a backlog machine for older games mainly.

That’s the new model for a lot of companies. Cut cost on testers, have an “early release” that lasts for anywhere from a year to as long as the game is on Steam, ask the community to report any issues, get them to mod to fix issues that can’t be patched, and reap the profits.
I’ve been an unpaid game tester for every Owlcat game that’s been released. I‘ll be damned if it doesn’t work.
We saw some versions of this (old Beta releases of games to dedicated fans), but it’s really kicked into high gear in the last few years.
Most big titles release and require a series of patches for many, many gigs.
I mean, Diablo 4 is jokingly finally coming out of early release; the next patch/update/whatever word they’re using now to describe them testing the game will probably fix major issues with the game.
So yeah, we’re all unpaid game testers. That’s a job market that’ll probably be dead by 2030.

The Deck is just a new toy for me to learn because I've never used Linux before, so it has a higher level of tinkering before I can sit down and play something. And then I'm wondering if I can play something ELSE that might require tinkering and thinking about how I might solve that problem.
It really is bizarre how many SD owners resonate with this (though, there are plenty that don't). Maybe it's just indicative of how many SD owners are also new to Linux and enjoy learning the unique way things have to be set up in order to run in parity with their more-familiar Windows setups.
mikezenox: I personally spend a lot more time gaming than tweaking anything, and even then, it's mostly getting the controller inputs to my liking.
Since getting my steam deck, I've completed around 50 or so coop/single-player games, and it's really insane how many of these worked out of the box with no tweaking whatsoever. This is not counting emulated games that have all worked as well (with the exeption of that update that hroke parsing for everyone). 'S.T.A.L.K.E.R. anomaly' is just about the only game that I gave up on (error on startup), but I've since received some tips to use next time I feel like trying.
Interesting_Extent98: I agree. I find myself fudging more when I am playing on my PC, like Mods for Skyrim and Cyberpunk... playing with the settings to get better frames and fidelity...
On the Steamdeck I just turn it on and pick a game, since it runs like a potato anyway, no point in messing around with it. If I feel like I need to work to make a game work, I'd just play that on PC.
onehundredcups: You know how nvidia’s GeForce experience has a scan games then optimize games? Why doesn’t steam deck have that? I just download and play the games, I should be changing settings? They seem to generally just work.
merlineatscake: Lots of games automatically detect your hardware and configure themselves already anyway. You won't usually get the best performance leaving it on those settings, but it's enough for most gamers I think.

Grace_Omega: Definitely not the case for me. I used to be like that on PC due to some health issues that make sitting at a desk for long periods hard, but since getting the Deck and being able to play in bed I've actually been digging into games again properly.

Kaizo107: I get the tinkering fix from modding, so while I do spend a lot of time doing back-end shenanigans, it's not really what I consider "game testing," it's more "finding the perfect experience for a handful of games and then sinking thousands of hours into them"
Just bought a Anbernic RG35XX, I’m going through the effort of flashing a new SD card for it with a new operating system, downloading gigabytes of ROM’s and BIOS files… even though I know I’ll only play the first 5 mins of any game I start to see how it runs…

pretendingtolisten: at this point just create a subreddit with a repository of game setting proton offshoots and whatever you did to optimize a game so I can easily search it up. I love playing games but looking on steam db can be overwhelming

Grace_Omega: Definitely not the case for me. I used to be like that on PC due to some health issues that make sitting at a desk for long periods hard, but since getting the Deck and being able to play in bed I've actually been digging into games again properly.

Kaizo107: I get the tinkering fix from modding, so while I do spend a lot of time doing back-end shenanigans, it's not really what I consider "game testing," it's more "finding the perfect experience for a handful of games and then sinking thousands of hours into them"
