If I make a community and select 'moderators only', is that the same thing as private or will it still be visible?

I just want a sidebar to mess around with first before I make the changes to my actual community's sidebar.

Moderators only means that only moderators are able to create new posts. Anyone can still view the community and interact with the posts/comments.

So ergo no posts=nothing to see. If I just give it some random name I should be fine, I'm guessing.

If you post, the post will be public.

If you squatted a community and didn't do anything with it I imagine you'd be at risk of:

  • Having someone else petition the admins to actually do something with it.
  • Having it removed in spam cleanups.

What would be the purpose of a community that users can't post to and mods don't post to?

To test platform features. I used to have a private sub on Reddit for this purpose so when I was modding the real subs I knew what I was doing and how.

Fair enough. I'd recommend to fill out the sidebar with an explanation like this so folks understand what it's about. Good luck.
