How to avoid duplicate communities?

Hey I'm a refugee from Reddit & I'd like to make a community or two that I was a part of on Reddit if they don't already exist on lemmy, in particular the r/GoogleCloud community.

Is there an easy way to search across all servers to see if these communities exist before I create one?

Based on my understanding you should be able to search for communities via https://browse.feddit.de/ It'll show communities from all federated servers.

Pardon the noop question ~ but how do I join a community on a different server?

Assuming that the name of the community is !community@otherinstance

Normal way

  • Open lemm.ee and click the search icon
  • Paste the community link in the search bar and hit enter. It should appear in the search list
  • Click the community link. The community page should open
  • Click Subscribe

Hacker way

  • Open a new tab in your browser and in the URL bar, type lemm.ee/c/community@otherinstance
  • Click Subscribe

Have a look at the "How do I join a community from another instance?" section in our Guide/FAQ. Let me know if that doesn't clear it up!
