"Oh cool! Does that mean you could fix my kitchen sink? It keeps backing up randomly, oh and the faucet will always drip..."

I do want to learn plumbing, it would be a rather handy way to save some money for minor jobs down the line

It's also a handy way to make some money. The plumbers around here charge by the visit, which ends up being around $600 per hour!

Oh of course, those skills are invaluable. The joke is everyone hears you're in an industry remotely adjacent and then goes "Oh so you can do xyz for me?"

Yeah haha, I got it, just wanted to reply with something 😅. Luckily (I think?) most people don't really ask too many follow up questions

I recently diagnosed and fixed (by replacing) the toilet cistern inlet valve. First time doing very, very basic plumbing.

I was quite pleased with myself for saving the couple hundred bucks it would have cost me to have someone do it for me.

The most complicated job I've ever had would make people's eyes glaze over when I was explaining what I did, even my wife's. So I started saying "website stuff", and everyone would go "oh, super cool!" and then we'd change the subject.

I want my eyes to glaze over. Tell me about your complicated job.
