I just got flashbacks. To add on to this those late 90s porn sites that when they finally did load had the little stars on the tits and groin and were like $20/mo.
You either had top to bottom line by line or you had a square that then turned 8 squares then 16 then a blurry titty, 20 minutes late mom picked up the phone to call her sister and you were back to national geographic magazines.
I had a scam involving that- I would download porn pics from the internet at campus computer labs (I was still in high school, but it was hard to stop anyone who wanted to from using the labs, especially at 2 am) and then upload them to BBSes and I'd get a huge ratio and be able to download a shit ton of games. So I got spank material and was able to play a bunch of games for free.
Which file format was it where you’d get the whole box and it would sharpen as the download continued? Would start off super blurry but at least you weren’t waiting for the line by line paint-in.

I had a freaking 300 baud modem. Was happy when I got a 1,200 baud because I could read that fast.
Download a 1 meg file for a day then have someone pickup the phone at 98% complete. Argh!
