Yeah, they're morons, but nowhere there do they claim they "defeated covid." What their statement implies is that they (in this case incorrectly) believed this event was not likely to be a spreader event due to overall lower numbers and impacts of covid nationally compared to 4 years ago. It does not imply that "they" specifically "defeated covid", that's clearly a feelings-driven logical leap on your part.
