A little pedantic but your chance of dying in battle would be rather low. Dying during travel however...
Modern battles are much better. No 3 months of travel needed, just dig a ditch and the explosives will do the rest.
Or even better: just control a drone equipped with grenades from the comfort of far away from the frontlines.
Ancient people were crazy by modern standards too.
