This will be my first Christmas without her. I've already had our first anniversary (23rd) and her first birthday (44th), and now Christmas, New Year (which we always spent together) and my birthday.
The problem with this diagram -- with this theory -- is that it assumes the outer circle can grow. That it is not moored, permanently, to the inner circle.

Hey, I am so sorry for what you're going through, I lost my dad almost 6 years ago, I still miss him dearly. I think that diagram is right, in that life grows around you, you can ignore that, but if you participate in it, you'll see that there will be new people around, loving people.
They'll never fill the hole your lost one left and they're not supposed to, but they'll fill your life with new things and looking back, it'll never feel empty.
For me it was my mom's new husband, my parents were divorced almost 10 years before my dad passed. My stepdad was the best thing that could have happened to my family, he never could replace our dad, in that they're very different people, and he never would want to, but what he has done for my mom, my sisters, my grandma and me made him as irreplaceable as my dad was.
The day my dad died, I was sitting in the train home to take care of things, I stumbled about this reddit comment by u/gsnow and it helped me process what was happening to me and my family. I couldn't thank that Internet stranger enough for his kind words.
I hope that helps a little, look around and see, you're not alone.
Stay afloat stranger <3

It’s been 11 years and this comment just sent a 500 foot wave over me about my dad.
It’s been a while since I’ve cried for him like this.
Other people can bring big waves too. When my son was born was an amazing happy time, but I still can’t shake the regret that my dad never got to meet him. Hugging my son when he’s too tired to get to bed makes up for it, and he’s made us world so much bigger.

Hey, it’s been a year but I just want to say that your comment helped me when my dad’s death was fresh. Thank you.

Hey, thank you for reaching out, coincidentally today would've been my dad's 74th birthday. I'm having a tough time lately and your little message made me smile. It means a lot to me right now, so thank you again :) best wishes

The first year is the hardest. Every event and anniversary that passes is momentous. It took me three years before I stopped feeling like grief was my identity. It's coming up on 8 now, and I still think of him every day, but without that crushing weight. Please feel welcome to message me if you want advice or if you just want to talk about her. People in your life will often change the subject or get sad, because they think talking about her will make it worse, but I always felt better talking about him.

I am saddened by your loss.
I am of similar ages and anniversary years, and your post resonates strongly with me.
I pray you find whatever you need to deal with this. I am so sorry.

Orphan since 15. For me grief absolutely got smaller.

I am so sorry for your loss. I'm sure it feels overwhelming and neverending right now. In my experience the diagram is pretty accurate, but they fail to mention that sometimes it can take a very long time to grow around the grief. And while it may not be a long time chronologically, to your mind and heart it will feel like an incredibly long time. But it will happen. One day you will be able to breathe a little easier. The weight of grief will feel a little lighter. And you might even feel a little guilty about it, but thats when you have to give yourself a reality check. That person you loved, loved you back. They would have wanted you to be happy. You have to let yourself accept the lessening of grief too.
Holidays are hard for me too. I lost the most important person in my life a few years ago on Dec 15th so christmas is especially challenging. Anyway, if you need someone to talk to who gets it, you can pm me.

The word 'to' was lost from one of the last figures.
GabrielBell12fi@lemmy.world · 4 pts · 1y
That's how it appeared on tumblr -- when I cropped it I cropped it just above the caption "growing around grief"
I have made a lot of mistakes but somehow missing out the word "to" is not one of them.

Oh i wouldn't care if you had cropped it out by mistake, i only mentioned it because it looks like it made it into official publication back in the 90s with the typo - which i find interesting

This is the first thanksgiving without my mom. I hate that all I really can think about when thinking about her, is what she must have felt like right before she died. And guilt for not being there, but also how the last time I ever talked to her was in anger.

Fuck.
I had a snappy comeback until I realized this wasn't abstract.
I've lost my mom, my dad, step sister, foster parents, and adoptive parents.
I don't know the loss you feel. I'm sorry.
The loss of someone you chose to be a family with must be much stronger.
I hope it gets easier while the fond memories get stronger.

"But slowly, life begins grow bigger around it"
The person who wrote that needs to grow their circle of grammatical knowledge.

Im so sorry Gabe. Just reading your words brings tears to my eyes. I know it’s so hard. But I hope you never forget that you will always carry her around with you until the end, the echo she left on your life. And maybe with enough time, you will realize she can be the one to push your circle out.
