This is an off-the-cuff brainstorm to grow /c/NBA and the fediverse.
Lemmy and the fediverse have scene solid and steady growth since the reddi API-ocalypse.
However, we had a more active year our first year compared to this year (so far) in /c/NBA. Probably in no small part to the lack of high seas support on this instance.
I have been pondering on how to grow this community but also make it unique in NBA/sports fandom.
I am gravitating towards some group-oriented ideas--a little pretend gambling, a little streamlined fantasy sportsing (hyper simplified), some end of season award voting, etc.
Before elaborating on anything in particular: does anyone have some big ideas they've been sitting on they'd like to share? I will share some below as well.

I feel like presently the overlap of people who are in the fediverse and into sports is pretty slim :/. I don't have any big ideas, sorry, but I appreciate all the content. Let's make NBA cup predictions. We could do season awards too. <3 and thanks to the mods

Couple thoughts I have:

Moving instances could be the first step, then setting some recurring (not automated) post to keep the visitors interested could be fine; I'd also try/ask to stop teams communities until we have established a nice group here, although they don't see to gain much attention

What are the meaningful unfederated communities? I'm mildly out of the loop on federation drama lately. I don't care about arbitrarily changing instances, but I will if there's enough unfederated ones we like that maybe I didn't notice defederated etc.

I’ll have to look again but I know Beehaw isn’t of the top of my head. Switching was more for the high sees part too.

I think you're doing a great job! I don't post enough, but I'll try to do better!

I think we should post things NBA related that people want to talk about. I'll try and post more content.

Hey guys, I've been on Lemmy since the APIcalypse and I'm a big Knicks fan, and really sports fan in general. It's a bit of a chicken or the egg problem with the sports communities on Lemmy, because I feel like there are actually more fans on Lemmy than we realize. But when the communities seem dead, people stop using them, and it's a vicious cycle. For some reason I never actually subscribed to this community in the first place, but I'll try to do my part from now on.
First of all I think keeping everything in one community is a must, like people initially went way too fast on trying to create team specific communities before building a generalized NBA community here.
I agree that incorporating the high seas would be a good idea, but it's also really disruptive to try to migrate to another server. Perhaps a workaround would be creating a separate community on a piracy friendly server and linking it from here when necessary.
But really the main thing is pretty simple: we all need to get out of our shells and try to post and comment more often, and hopefully things will build momentum from there.

Yeah I think it's time I start interacting here more.
We just have to be patient and be more active.

I still don't understand why you'd prefer to stick with a community on LW when there is a whole instance at https://nba.space waiting for more participation.
