You're right, the structure is still there. Their digestive system just got rerouted to another opening.

It's a finger/thumb, rectangle/square situation.

Not all people with a colostomy bag have their anus sewn shut, but everyone with their anus sewn shut have a colostomy bag.

In cases like having an abdominoperineal resection for colorectal cancer, the rectum is sometimes removed and the anus sewn shut

Wait, so some people just have a dangling piece of colon attached to nothing but their anus?

It's often still connected to the ostomy. That would be called a loop stoma (ileo-/colostomy, I don't know about urostomies tho) the below diagram is a loop colostomy

Some do, some don't. Depends whether they/you think you're getting hooked back up eventually.

I suppose it might be possible to have an injury that results in not having an anus, but it's not an inherent part of having a colostomy bag.

It doesn't stink? Let me sniff, I'll be the judge of that.

Devrom, and also it's a left side ostomy so she likely has her colon. Colostomies (in general) stink less than ileostomies, whose smell can strip paint.
