MP opposes calls to ban first-cousin marriage in the UK saying it can 'help build family bonds'

https://www.standard.co.uk/news/politics/mps-first-cousins-marriage-commons-batley-dewsbury-b1199171.html

He added: “The reason the practice is so common is that ordinary people see family inter-marriage overall as something that is very positive, something that helps build family bonds and helps put families on a more secure financial foothold.

People who think that is how you bond with family should be removed from any family setting for the safety of those around them.

The UK has seen a rise in infant mortality, which has been linked to this practice among the Muslim communities in the UK. This is probably what motivates this legislation. It is evidence based.

Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1y (1 reply)

I'm sure the rise in infant mortality has nothing whatsoever to do with the NHS being underfunded, though.

ForgotAboutDre@lemmy.world · 3 pts · 1y

This is blatant ignorance and misinformation. Infant mortality is and has been decreasing outside the Muslim communities in the UK. The people trying to pass the laws are doing to stop Muslim children dieing.

Not only do children die because of it, they are also more likely to suffer illnesses and disability. Disability that impact their IQ and result in them making comments like yours.

If it wasn't so common, there would be no need to ban it.

Why are we telling consenting adults whether or not they can fuck other consenting adults?

Speculater@lemmy.world · 21 pts · 1y

It's like many forms of incest, there's typically a power dynamic that results in a victim. Not to mention, society pays the price of covering children born at a higher risk of genetic disorders. Morally, there's nothing wrong with two consenting adults getting it on, practically, it's rarely consensual in incestuous relationships.
