Before you say anything: I know. Clannad After Story is a direct sequel, but I want to watch Kyou-hen, Tomoyo-hen and maybe the movie as well, my question is: Would it be better to experience any of these before heading to After Story?

Definitely watch After story next. It's so worth it to be in the same mindset.

I haven’t watched the movie. I went into After Story and then the Kyou and Tomoyo bits and I’m glad I did it that way. Not sure how it would go the other way.

I would suggest you watch the after story first, then those special episodes, because those special episodes are more like what-if stories.
