I find the typing indicator useful in chats that are happening in real time as it helps to pace the conversation. Read receipts I don't really like, sent and delivered are all I need.
I just make sure my SO is also in the chat so I can delegate my social communication to her. Even worked with my mom for a month...they hate each other now :x

The first thing I do in any new chat app is disable read receipts and typing indicators. That shit is creepy.
