It only seems to work for the thumbnails. Anywhere else you click loads in the same window. It annoys me too.

Only for lemmy. Specifically this instance (which i assume controls the UI of my lemmy experience when i access through my browser)

You might consider creating an account on my instance, redlemmy, it uses photon, which is a different UI than the standard.
There's mobile apps that are more fully featured as well, hopefully someone else in this thread can recommend one
