One key innovation came in 1889, when Connecticut inventor William Gray, frustrated with having to beg use of a phone to summon a doctor when his wife took ill, devised the first coin-operated public telephone.
1889 is in the 19th century. And ancient in terms of the development of communications technology, sure. But I think if someone said that Queen Victoria lived in ancient times, few people would agree.

The 17th century (1600s) might possibly fit the community, but the late 1800s (or 19th century) are definitely too recent.
