[Challenge-Solved] I have actually used a couple variants of this thing

It's a metal band tensioner and cutter. Usually used to secure something to a post that you have no intention of removing for the foreseeable future.

That looks like a band-it strap puller/tightener.

I forget what the actual name is, but it can latch onto a metal strip and pull it tight around some digs to keep boxes and canisters in place, or to hold a strong back repair plate on a damaged pipe

We have a winner.

Im sure they have a real name but if you asked anyone who knows what it is for the "metal band tightener/cutter" they would know what you meant.

I mean individually humans are pretty stupid. each one of us only knows so much information. But collectively we know a fuckin ton of shit.

I love coming on here and seeing weird tools I haven't ever seen or forgot existed. So many of us interact with something all day that many others wouldn't have any clue what it's called. We just don't notice because we are around that item and people who know what it's called.

Why is this so downvoted?

Majorllama@lemmy.world · 1 pts · 1y

No clue. I am guessing it's because people don't like thinking that they aren't very intelligent in the grand scheme of human intelligence?

I don't know the name, but it's a tool to tighten a steel band.

Correct but beaten slightly to the punch by the other guy.

Is it a nut splitter, to help remove a nut that has seized to the bolt threads?

Majorllama@lemmy.world · 2 pts · 1y (2 replies)

It is not.

Wild guess: a tool for manually shaping iron rods or rebar?

Negative Wilco Rodger.
