Most sources I've read state that Opossum refers exclusively to North American Opossums and Possum is exclusively Australian Possums.

However, this one article on Meriam-Webster.com claims that the two spellings are interchangeable

Ticks, mostly. JK, they are one of the few wild animals to not get riddled with ticks. They groom like crazy (think housecat level of grooming) so they probably aren't too bad to snuff
