Are opensource groupfunded self hosted mmos a thing?

Always thought private servers were fun for aqworlds, was wondering if there are any popular legal self hosted mmos. Mmos dont make much money and a lot of ppl developing them just want to play their dream games supposedly, wonder why no ones kickstarted or tried to groupfund an open source mmo, where the project cant die and any interested team could fork it or take over.

Awesome thank you, some of those look cool, most seem dead tho sadly, perpetuum seems like a sick concept, never heard of it

If you’re self-hosting, it doesn’t matter too much. Veloren is pretty actively developed still though.

Isn't City of Heroes all open source and self hosted now?
