I've recently beaten the Moon lord for the first time and loved the experience. And I'm thinking of playing all over.
But I'm a little confused. When I created a new worlds inside my previously played character, I carried over basically everything I had in my inventory. Is it supposed to be similar to NG+ in dark souls? (without difficulty bump) In that, am I supposed to create a new character because I basically cheese the entire run with the weapons and items I carry over?

Worlds and characters are independent. To truly start over you need to make both a new character and world. Otherwise you'd be bringing an OP character into a new world or bringing a new character into your old world

There you go. You can also do this as a multi-world playthrough, such as if you wanted to explore a naturally-generated Crimson world but yours was Corruption. (And yes, it is still technically possible to get Crimson in a Corruption world and vice versa via the Dryad on a Blood Moon, who will sell the opposite evil’s seeds.)
