Me and my buddy haven't needed that much fire clay yet, but we have basically only andesite for stone within a thousand blocks or more so it is rather difficult to do leather. Took me over a day cycle heading back after finally finding some and I had forgotten my pick so I couldn't event bring any with me
Crazy thing is, my first ever game I spawned on a moderately small island and there was fire clay right on my porch 😂 Not that I knew what it was at first...!
