Most people do not know how it came it be. On reddit, the only "rule" was to have a title, as a post couldn't be made without one. there used to be multiple variations "title" "thing" ".".

i assumed it was people indicating that they are posting due to the one rule (post before you leave)

It was indeed people posting that they were following the rule, it started on the 195 subreddit that was the precursor to 196, but IIRC people only started incorporating 'rule' as a joke in longer titles on 196
