Wheel of Time Season 3 - First 3 Episodes Discussion Thread [Spoilers all Books and Show]

The first three episodes have been released on Prime today. There is no discussion post about it yet and even if there is not so much going on here maybe some here would still like to and talk about this season (I do).

I haven't watched it myself yet, but I'll definitely be watching the first episode tonight.

No spoiler thoughts:

While once again it feels a bit rushed pacing at major scenes, the cinemography, costuming, acting, and choreography were all top notch. They did veer off books, but it didn't feel too off and we got to see a few major books events we've been waiting for.

Overall I really liked these first three episodes as a long term book fan, and I think anyone who's been able to hold their nose through some of the questionable decisions in the previous seasons will too. It's awesome seeing this world on screen even if you have to take it as another turning of the wheel from the one in the books.

I thought these were the best three episodes they've produced for the show so far. A little rushed in places, and a few things to make a book purist cringe, but ultimately the characters feel more like who they "should be," and I think it's finally becoming clear how they're going to speedrun some of the plot threads.

Plus the cinematography in episode 1's opening scene was really fun.

I am really excited and optimistic for the rest of the season. I was on board for the previous seasons but not exactly excited, if that makes sense.

Some thoughts to episode 1 in no special order (caution spoilers):

  • I really like the set and the costumes, they are perfect. They were not bad in the previous seasons, but they are getting better and better
  • Even though the scene itself was great, I'm not quite sure what to make of the Black Ajah fight. To me the balance of power doesn't seem quite right, Suan in particular just seems weaker than she should be in my opinion
  • I liked what they did with Aviendha and Elayne, but I'm not a fan of Rand and Egwene still being together at this point. They should have wrapped that up and used the time to really start to build up the relationship with Elayne (not that there wasn't anything, I just would have preferred a bit more direct approach). But we will see where they are going with that. Even though I liked the general idea behind Rand's love life in the books, it is also one of the points with the greatest potential for improvement in the realisation.
  • Love Mat, he is great
  • Moghedien is reeeeaaaaly creepy and thats good
  • It's great to see how Rand is for once evading all influence and unexpectedly goes his own way. I also think it's very smart from a story perspective. It's been a while since I read the books, but I don't think it ever made sense to me that Callandor came before the Aiel waste

Definitely a good start, I'm looking forward to see how it will go on. Hope to find time for episode two soon.

I believe he goes to the waste before he gets Callandor in the book. As the Aiel help him take tear.

No, it's a weird fluke but in The Dragon Reborn (#3) he ends up in Tear at the same time as some Aiel, and they take the Stone the same night Rand takes Callandor. After, in the Shadow Rising (#4), Rand goes to the waste and all the fun stuff after happens.

Ah thank you, I forgot about that. I started my first read through the series last year and am finally about halfway through towers of midnight. Do you recall why the Aiel were there in the first place?

I'm a little hazier on this. When Perrin frees Gaul from the cage, he tells him that He Who Comes With the Dawn is going to Tear. My best guess is that Gaul gathered up some others as he went east, and they were poking around. No idea why they attacked the Stone on the same night Rand did, though.
