I'm not really knowledgeable here, but isn't Champagner a reserved brand specifically for sparkling wine from the Champagne?
Is it even legal to promote American sparkling wine as Champagner?

Unfortunately the US is not signatory of the Treay of Versailles of which a part enforces the Champagne designation, so in the US it is legal to produce and sell Champagne despite not being made in France.
