The previous flag was alongside Jamaica, the only national flag in the world without either blue, red or white.
On this day, August 5 2017, a majority of voters in Mauritania approved a new flag design, adding two red stripes to the old flag, representing the sacrifices of the people defending the country.

Yeah, I agree. I also prefer the version where they did not change the green or the bending of the crescent. Apparently that was the initially presented proposal.
