I'm old school Xorg, but want to give Wayland a go. The application that has me stymied is VMware Horizon client . It explicitly doesn't support Wayland, but shouldn't it work under Xwayland? How do I explicitly make it run with that, and not fail telling me Wayland isn't supported?

Unfortunately I still get "The display server protocol that you are using is not supported." when I set the environment variable. Other ideas?

Xwayland is started via a compositor, so you should check the documentation for your chosen compositor for Xwayland compatibility and instructions on how to start Xwayland.
