DOGE aims to migrate all Social Security Administration's computer systems off COBOL in a matter of months, risking the integrity of the system

Having worked in software for decades now, this is a new engineer fetish. Oh that thing that’s working over there is using the wrong old technology. Better rewrite it at massive cost and risk and at the end we will hopefully have a system that performs the exact same function.

This should be fun. 🍿

It's like Alexander the Great untying the Gordian knot by cutting it in half, but if the Gordian knot was actually important and cutting it in half could destroy Phrygia.
