Is anyone else having trouble with H.265/HEVC playback with NVIDIA graphics?

In VLC I just get a garbled image regardless of what the video output is set to. In MPV it plays at a very low frame rate.

Doesn't work for me either.

I usually use my 7800 IGP (and it works there in mpv), but if I change the device to the nvidia GPU (a 3xxx series) it just doesn't play, or it crashes, depending on the hardware decoder.

I never normally use the nvidia GPU for anything but compute though, not even display out.

I realized it might help to post some specs.

  • DE: KDE Plasma 6.3.3
  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5800X
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 470 Super
  • Kernel: 6.14.0-4-cachyos

I've not even installed Cachyos but I've been reading the wiki. If you haven't done so already, you may have to install the proprietary driver, non-free. Then, if that doesn't work, there's a bunch of stuff in the wiki regarding NVIDIA. Yours appears to be an older NVIDIA card, and does not support the latest open driver.

My card is the RTX 4070 Super. I think that should use the latest driver. Shouldn't it?

From what I've seen in the documentation, I would say the answer is yes.
