Why can't Signal generate certain link previews?

I was wanting to share a Hoopla Digital link with someone and it immediately declared "link preview unavailable" without even trying as it usually does. This library-backed website is harmless. Signal's preview generation can be a little bothersome at times.

does the site have a link preview? those are not generated, they're created by the website maker.

They are generated out of the metadata in the sites header tag.

I've tried to add link previews for my own website in Signal and I was mildly unsuccessful in figuring out the right tags to use. But I also didn't spend a lot of time on it.

It's likely that Hoopla also doesn't generate the right metadata tags that Signal expects to generate the preview.

well yeah, just like websites are generated from HTML. point being, someone has to make them.
