Lemmy.world and similarly large instances have high hosting costs
Not surprised tbh. Services cost money. Good services cost more money. It's the basic triangle of expectations.
I would definitely be down to give a little money every month if someone put in the legwork to set up a newsletter and recurring payment system.
Lemmy should run ads and its API should be pay per use
So wait a second. Is the owner of the instance rich or something? How is lemmy.world founded?
