They did have to and always signed under oath that they did, but the Academy never had a way of verifying that

Today, some members, particularly in the Executive and Marketing and PR branches, simply press play on the Academy app to satisfy the system’s viewing requirement — then mute the audio or switch tabs. “The app only needs to see that you watched it,” says one voter. “It doesn’t know if you’re sitting there.”

That is a requirement that you play the movie.

Not watching all the movies definitely explains a few of the trends in winners over the years.

Lol, they need to do a little quiz after the movies. But really though, if you don't want to watch the movies why are you an academy voter
