My understanding was it was created as a way to simplify thoughts. It can be used as part of therapy since people sometimes struggle to find the right words to explain how they feel. Toki pona is easy to learn and finding the right words isn't as challenging with only a few to pick from.

Right now there are some 150 words really in use, while some 100 more used by some people and probably a few more just used in the idiolect of a single person.
