Good morning. ☕🦆😲
5 July 2025
Do you remember when fresh coffee came in vacuum-sealed cans that had to be opened with a can opener? Those quietly disappeared, didn’t they?
This morning, I made a mistake so embarrassing, the cultured elite would be well within their rights to scoff. I reached for what I thought was a bag of coffee beans, only to discover—gasp—it was pre-ground French roast.
Now, the French roast isn’t the issue. But pre-ground? That’s a betrayal of everything my Coffee-Snob persona stands for.
If I were to mingle among people—not that I will—I wouldn’t be able to meet a single gaze. My coffee grinder sits in silent judgment.
It is a sad morning. This misstep will set my credibility back weeks.

@Swede1952@universeodon.com Ow! I feel your pain. Too often I grab the wrong bag or can, because I don't take the time to triple-check, use my label reading pocket magnifier (shit for eyes).
Either I live with the consequences or donate to a food drive 🤣
Those old metal coffee cans were handy. I used to use one as a step stool for a quick high reach. Made a nice drum out of one.

I usually order coffee bean online from Sam's Club, but the "checking the label" advice is still valid. There was a time when I would just set it aside, but I'm going to use it. How bad can it be. I just won't tell anybody. Oops. 🤣

@Swede1952@universeodon.com I wouldn't tell anybody I ordered from ... that. 😬 🤢 🤮

Yeah, there’s that too. But honestly, their beans aren’t bad—there are a few decent brands to choose from. I usually go with Maker’s Mark or Starbucks. I mean, I used to be one of those coffee snobs who swore by small-batch beans from obscure roasters. But after enough taste tests, I realized the difference wasn’t earth-shattering. I can spend $25 for two pounds… or $25 for five. Sure, I brace myself for judgment from fellow caffeine purists—but let’s be honest, I’ve been that guy too. 😂

@Swede1952@universeodon.com Keep it in the freezer once opened - it'll be sort-of OK-ish for a few days.

Ok-ish 😂

@Swede1952@universeodon.com That's what I'm drinking right now - we don't take a grinder on holiday with us so there's part of a packet left in the freezer.

The coffee this morning was better than I expected. But keeping the grounds fresh is an issue, I may try that and deal with ok-ish until its gone.

@Swede1952@universeodon.com I had the opposite problem this morning. I have beans but my seven month old coffee grinder decided that it didn’t want to grind them anymore and just make a horrendous sound instead. Luckily I have a backup manual hand cranked grinder that just keeps on going as long as you’re willing to turn it. My morning coffee-geddon avoided…
Got me thinking maybe I should just go with preground – oh the horror!

“I should probably get a manual grinder—just in case. You never know when disaster might strike.”

@Swede1952@universeodon.com My wife hated the manual grinder because it took me 20 minutes to grind enough for a pot of coffee. She’s a tea drinker and it was just the sound of my grinding that she didn’t like.
She got me a fancy KitchenAid burr grinder that had a gentle whir sound, but now 1 bean is sufficient to jam it, resulting in a horrible grating noise.
So yes, I was happy I had my manual grinder! I also generally don’t mind the time it takes because it is my Zen moment in the morning.

That’s cool. I need to find one I can stash away until I need it. It’s convenient to just press a button in the morning and grab some water while the beans grind.
