Where should I start with the music?

I get called goth a lot because of how I dress, but the only remotely gothic band I listen to is Evanescence.

Anyway, I am very curious about the music, because I don't even really know what qualifies.

Plus if, as I've seen said here, the music is what defines membership in the subculture, it would be another step towards my goal of being more connected to actual alternative culture, cause as it stands I mostly only look the part.

I'm mostly a metal girl myself, if that helps.

Hate to break it to you but Evanescence is rock, maybe Metal adjacent. Amy Lee might look goth, but she does not sound goth.

Goth would be more Bauhause, Siouxie and the Banshees, Sisters of Mercy, Skeletal Family, Christian Death, Fields of the Nephilim, Joy Division, London After Midnight, Dead Can Dance to name a few.

Depeche Mode is goth adjacent but usually gets confused as goth. If you go to a club you will also hear a lot of Darkwave and Industial as well, especially since they are very good to dance to.

One advice I give baby bats is to install Shazam on your phone and go to a goth club and look up the songs you like. It's an easy way to build up a playlist.

Hope that helps.
