Why not comment rather than downvote? This community is about in-depth discussion, that's probably why they prefer comments to downvotes

It's a pretty sad looking community anyway, appears to be the mods personal soapbox where they ban anyone who doesn't upvote them.

I looked it up, the ban reason is "Mindless no-contribution downvoting in a community you do not participate in."
Probably deserved by the rules, but if they care that much they should just use an instance that doesn't accept downvotes.

Ah! So by expressing my opinion of a post's irrelevance, I've incurred some kind of "no, not that kind of participation" penalty.
I'm surprised it was a reason so relatively tame. I think I've been kicked out of communities for better reasons.
