If you receive a message about verification from anyone other than the admins report it, it is a scam

the ones I've seen look something like this:

Our latest policy changes require all users to verify their accounts. It appears your verification is still incomplete.

Please confirm your account at the link below:

🔗[scam link]

Failure to do so may result in restricted access. The process is simple and fast.

Thank you for your cooperation, Mastodon Support Team

You should explain what each would look like so people have a easier time of telling the difference.

  1. The quoted scam message says Mastodon, but I'm seeing it on Lemmy. So presumably this is a Mastodon issue and is irrelevant to Lemmy users such as us.

  2. Giving an example of what a legit message would look like gives the scammers what they would need to mimic it. Better to list the admins to compare to any suspicious message senders.
