This game, and the sequel Descent 2 were my favorite childhood games. As a kid I was never that good, but that was the era when cheat codes were a thing. I still remember a bunch of the cheats, and the easter eggs like in Descent 2 if you typed the code from the original to enable cheats (GABBAGABBAHEY) it would set your health and energy to 1. Or the cheat that covered the area around the hud with a tiled photo of what I assume was one of the devs.
Descent was both such a product of its time, but also so far ahead of its time. And somehow it controlled like a dream even though you could play exclusively on a keyboard and never touch the mouse.

Descent is actually my favorite game of all time!
There's also the successor game Overload, written by the two lead developers of Descent. Overload might as well have been named Descent 4, but they lost the rights to the Descent name after the original team split up. The graphics are absolutely amazing!

I never knew that Overload existed before today...

I actually have a copy of it, but sadly my current laptop is about a potato and only gets about 3 frames per second at absolute lowest quality graphics settings âšī¸
But hey, if you got a decent gaming rig, I'm sure you'll find the game totally awesome and worth every penny đ

This game was so good, I'd spend so many hours in the level editor. One of my favorite things was you could glitch it to put different rooms in the same place, so you could make a corridor where they need to go around in a circle like three times before they get to the exit. Not good level design, but a delight to my kid brain

I never actually tried the level editor, but I'm pretty sure I have a copy of that around somewhere.

We took down the network at Clemson University with Descent back in the 90's. Good times. Worth the trouble we got into over it.

Did you know that in the original release of Descent 1, there was a bit of a glitch with that boss robot, and it was practically impossible to defeat?
Yeah, later revisions fixed that, and although still tough to beat, they made it more fair.

I thought I was the only person that remembered Descent. I played the shit out of it and descent II. Descent III was such a disappointment...
Descent II also introduced me to Type O Negative, man that was such an amazing sound track to play to...
