I remember one time years ago, there was an NES mashup type flash game, where you could choose a main character from one title and play a different NES title. Samus in the Super Mario world was OP.
If doable with a controller, that would kick ass, and I'd try again!
You might be thinking of Super Mario Bros. Crossover, although that only goes in one direction: you can choose from a bunch of characters, but you're always playing Super Mario Bros.
That sounds awesome. Reminds me of M.U.G.E.N. , which is a fighting game that has a huge variety of modded characters. It is basically a meme game at this point.
