#YouTube is starting to implement age restrictions , globally, to control who watches videos with mature themes, violence, or explicit language.
They plan to use AI-based age estimation. It will attempt to estimate a user's age based on viewing habits, search history, and account longevity. This is being tested with a small group of users in the U.S.
If the AI flags a user as potentially being under 18 and they try to watch an age-restricted video, they will be prompted to verify their age. The options for verification include uploading a government-issued ID, using a credit card, or, in some cases, a selfie.
Of course, this is to protect children. There's 0 chance this is really meant for government and corporations to identify who is using their site and to track them.
Users who are flagged and do not verify their age will be blocked from viewing age-restricted videos and may face other account restrictions.
Since this is global, a VPN won't circumvent the restrictions.
People seem to have voted away their freedom.

@Rinakochi@hear-me.social Frankly, I think Google has learned that people rattle their sabers and ultimately do nothing about it.
I don't think it's going to matter to them that a tiny fraction of people will stop using YouTube any more than it bothers Meta that some people use Pixelfed.

I am loathe to recommend this, but there is a british website that allows you to lookup your local MP and use AI to generate a face based on them. Maybe use AI to generate fake GOP politicians.
