I was told by an Italian restaurant owner who had one employee from Romania that modern Romanian language is very similar to Italia - she could understand most of what he was telling.
Vlad the Impaler still has a more neutral-to-positive reputation in Romania because of that. In Vlad's defense, I may not support his Muslim-killing policy, but I absolutely support his boyar-killing policy!

I worked with an engineer who is Romanian and she told me the same thing.
It's like finding out they've been hiding a whole extra romance language in the basement this whole time.
