Flock of Herons

This photo shows nine birds from a flock of eleven—two didn’t make it into the frame. They’re yellow-crowned night herons (Nyctanassa violacea). One leads, followed closely by five others; a little farther back, a group of three trails behind. I was on a ship in the Caribbean when they flew parallel to us, gliding at eye level with my balcony.

The details of each bird are hard to make out, but their heads are tucked close to their bodies, and their long, slightly curved beaks point forward. Their broad, dark wings contrast with pale undersides, and their yellow legs and feet dangle behind like loose threads.
